Japan – Day 6 – Cortina

Written by t3rman on February 9, 2011 in Japan, Travel - 6 Comments

Got up early at 7 and shot over to Cortina today. Took 2 hours before we got on the slopes and it was a really small resort – about 15 runs and none were really that long. Snowed heavy last night, about 30cm and has snowed all day too. First run went up with Craig and Daryl and they were keen to hit the powder as soon as, so we hit the black as our first run….. Everyone here are borders and don’t realise how hard it is for skiers in fresh deep snow. Ended up struggling and fighting all the way down and was knackered by the end. First run and already done – not good. Carried on skiing for the next few hours but conditions were hard. Visibility low and snow heavy. Couldn’t actually see my skis for most of the morning as the powder was that deep!!!

Had lunch in the craziest/biggest hotel I have ever seen on the slopes. Had a 1000 yen voucher and a free Onsen included in the ticket. Skied a bit longer and then Kieron and I hit the Onsen as he was exhausted and I had been finding the runs a bit heavy on the legs.

Best Onsen so far. 5 pools, 3 waterfalls, Sauna, Steamroom and the all vital plunge pool. Really enjoying the bathing culture of Japan. Want my own Onsen.

Back at hotel now and Daryl is a head chef for the Commonwealth Bank in Australia so is cooking dinner for us all back at the lodge – can’t wait.

Onsens are wicked. They are so relaxing although we went in one yesterday it was way too hot… Don’t worry though scott, they have modesty towels if you want one :)
